Struggling with the P3 fic continues. It's reached a point where the paint-by-numbers form of storytelling is urging me to escalate the action and raise stakes, and the fan in me is saying I can't betray one of the characters the way that I am. Rewriting ho.

Also.

K.A.: aah... damn, man. Ever played Rez?
[info]grey_athena: A long time ago.
K.A.: I put it in to test the TV's graphics. Forgot it doubles as a hand massager.
K.A.: And triples as a sex toy.
Athena: and how would you know that unless you tried it out
K.A.: ...well because they designed a vibrator attachment for it.
Athena: ...:/
Athena: liar.
Athena: I don't believe it.

So for the enrichment of anyone on this flist who didn't catch it the last time I posted about this: yes.

Now, as to why I was testing a TV's picture? You see, I was feeling fatter than usual, so tonight I went out for my evening make-my-legs-work, and a scant 0.3 miles later I came across a 27" television sitting out on the curb.

No, no sign for donation or dump pick-up. Just sitting there, in a 'here, have at' kind of way. As far as I could tell, it wasn't significantly damaged (it's one of those gimpy combo decks with DVD and VHS drives, but hey, it was free), and with as many teenagers as there were in the neighborhood I couldn't expect the thing to last the night, either through someone else picking it up or some very bright person putting his foot through it because he could.

So, 0.3 miles of backtracking later, I find my mom watering in the backyard and tell her we need a cart and some rope, right now.

For reference, this is my old TV (I include the DS as an easy scale comparison).

And here is my new one (with the same DS for scale):

Yes.

It spazzes a bit when you just turn it on, there's a tape stuck in the tape deck (see me not caring), I'm pretty sure the DVD drive doesn't work (eta: it does! still not using it) and it has some color distortion when you switch from dark screens back to light ones (...okay, that kinda sucks). But, you know. FREE.

Also I found a quarter when I was cleaning out the stand for it. I gave it to my sister cuz she's cool.

EDIT: via [info]kytha-- god, how come my "How To Draw Manga" books were never this much of a trip down the rabbit hole? (Might be NSFW.)

music: yes it's playing Skies of Arcadia, Emmy

Love did bloom on the battlefield!
K.A.: I beat MGS4.
Bitstream: by accident?
K.A.: No, I saw this one coming.
K.A.: I got so nervous I checked a bunch of FAQs and memorized battle strategies.
K.A.: But the end stuff wasn't that hard, really.
K.A.: The ending is like TWO HOURS LONG.
Bitstream: holy crap
K.A.: It could have been half that length without losing anything.
K.A.: But really, it felt like some sort of fanfic ending.
K.A.: I nearly cried twice.
K.A.: Total wish fulfillment.
Bitstream: wow, it must have been awesome
K.A.: The final battle was the most amazing thing I'd ever played.
K.A.: I actually said "wow" out loud at several points.
Bitstream: totally worth it, eh?
K.A.: abso-fucking-lutely.
K.A.: It was like... the entire series was a build up to that moment.
K.A.: It was the most perfect battle I could have asked for.
Bitstream: you've poisoned yourself, haven't you? you plan on dying happy.
K.A.: How did you know?

Spoilers ho! )

Conclusion:

Still not as fun and zany as MGS3. I could not hunt my own food, recharge my batteries from eating glowing mushrooms, or spin the right analog stick to make my character dizzy and throw up. Also, there was not a single scene of someone wetting their pants. Loss of bladder control is the finest of MGS's traditions, second only to random acts of violence against the fourth wall, and its exclusion is unforgivable.

Therefore, INFERIOR.

However, adding a pause feature for the cutscenes was a stroke of genius only the entire history of the game industry overdue. Thanks for figuring it out eventually, design team?

In the end it's a nice cotton candy conclusion to a series of games so overwrought that fixing anything would sort of be missing the point. The character moments were what sold it for me. And the final battle and its counterpart moment in the epilogue were two of the most wonderful experiences in gaming, period, worth it entirely for the visceral emotion and closure that they brought.

And I have a great idea for a fic but I'm past threatening people with that now.

So, I got a decent score on the GRE, and after a few hours of wild carousing or whatever it is that nerds do when they see numbers that they like, I am all caught up on Avatar.

Itty bitty spoiler. Not even a spoiler. Just don't want to tint your glasses any if you haven't watched yet. )

It's the last day of bidding over on [info]livelongnmarry. Go, go! The donations have been pouring in; have yours count too!

And in less make-my-state-not-suck, more ooh-shiny news: it's the first day of E3. One of the first (actually interesting) items out the gate?

Final Fantasy XIII will not be a PS3 exclusive.

They're releasing it concurrently on PS3 and X-Box 360. Finally, a title where the comparative strengths of a console will affect my purchase. I want to say 360 will crunch the graphics better, but then, I've really seen nothing perform on the PS3 (MGS4 is waiting in its shrinkwrap till after I finish the rest of my gaming backlog), so this might actually be a tough call. An interesting call.

Also, there's a new trailer.

On the plus side, new trailer! On the down side, this thing looks derivative even by FF standards. Also, the Star Wars-esque music, Squeenix, what gives? The parallels were already a bit too strong for you to go down that path.

And if girl!Cloud finds that the way to save humanity is to have sex with a man and become a housewife (or remain a paragon of virginity, become an opera singer and/or DIE), I swear I'll never play a Japanese game again. So help me, Joss Whedon.

Actually, on that note, I expect a lot of yuri to result from this game. I call dibs on the AU where girl!Cloud gets gay-married with a party member in Sunnydale, California. Triple points!
